A common query we are asked is to clarify the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Although these standards do have some similarities, they deal fundamentally with different environments.
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 covers the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS), placing focus on an organisation’s impact on the external environment. The standard aims to reduce an organisation’s waste, pollution, and energy consumption.
What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001, on the other hand, focuses on an organisation’s internal environment.
So, what is the difference?
Whilst ISO 14001 requires the implementation of an environmental management system, ISO 45001 is based on an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS).
Getting certified in ISO 14001 displays a commitment to the environment, while ISO 45001 shows a commitment to your employees – so why not implement both?
